More About the Lesson...
The 7th grade spanish and art classes came together for two days to compare and contrast the environments of North Carolina and Costa Rica and are now working on separate artworks to collaborate on a larger temporary art installation for the school. The classes learned about the environment in Costa Rica by watching videos on the country's biodiversity and hearing stories from Ms. LaGuardia's travels there. Ms. LaGuardia had both classes read and act out a story in Spanish that included the various geographical regions. Students were inspired by landscape as well as the bright colors found in the animals and ox carts of Costa Rica.
Art students are focusing on the textures of the North Carolina landscape and producing collographs while the spanish class is looking at traditional patterns in Costa Rica that use the flora and fauna of the country to produce bright painted works of art. The art pieces will then be brought together and assembled into an ox cart to place in our school lobby. Students will write Artist Statements to explain their work and send them to Ms. Hawes' students in Costa Rica. The spanish class will help with the translation.
